To work in Egypt, a Chinese citizen needs two things: a work permit from the Ministry of Labour and a work-based residence permit from the immigration authorities. You cannot legally take a job on a tourist visa or e-visa. Rules in force since late 2025 generally cap foreign staff at 10% of an employer’s Egyptian headcount and usually ask for at least three years of relevant experience. For most Chinese people the realistic route is to be hired by a Chinese company or a foreign firm in Egypt, with the employer handling the paperwork, rather than flying to Cairo and looking around.
Be realistic about pay as well. As of November 2026 the statutory private-sector minimum is still EGP 7,000 a month, or about RMB 843. Local salaries tend to look low in RMB, so whether the move makes sense depends mostly on the expatriate package an employer offers. This guide follows Egypt’s new Labour Law (Law No. 14 of 2025, in force since 1 September 2025). Conversions use Banque Misr’s transfer rates of 4 November 2026: RMB 1 is about EGP 8.3 and US$1 is about EGP 55.3.
The job market: who hires Mandarin speakers
Egypt’s unemployment rate was 5.8% in the second quarter of 2026. The country issued 22,909 work permits to foreigners in 2024, up 32% on 2023, of which 7,224 went to non-Arab Asians. Published reports do not break out Chinese nationals.
Demand for Chinese speakers comes mainly from Chinese companies. At a job fair run by the Confucius Institute at Suez Canal University on 5 May 2026, recruiters included China State Construction Engineering Corporation, Anton Oilfield Services, New Hope, Jushi and Sailun. Roles covered translators, accountants, engineers, HR assistants, logistics coordinators, sales staff, procurement officers and production workers. A Midea listing for a Chinese speaker in Sadat City asks for a degree in Chinese or translation, one to three years of experience and current residence in Egypt.
Many of these jobs target Egyptian graduates. Chinese is now part of Egypt’s national education system and university departments are growing, while permit rules say foreign workers must not compete with Egyptians. On that reading, Chinese applicants have better odds in technical, production management and project roles that are hard to fill locally; translation alone is a weak card. Chinese companies in Egypt
The table lists only companies and zones with a public source. Figures are as reported at the time.
| Company or zone | Location | What is on record |
|---|---|---|
| China-Egypt TEDA Suez Economic and Trade Cooperation Zone | Suez Canal Economic Zone | Over 200 companies and over US$4.7 billion invested (September 2026); expansion agreement signed July 2025, taking the total area past 10 sq km |
| Xinfengming, Langma Tire, Tongling Jieya | TEDA Egypt zone | Contracts signed December 2025 worth about US$1.15 billion, with 5,400 direct jobs planned |
| OPPO | 10th of Ramadan City | Factory opened October 2025, about 2,000 Egyptian workers |
In fiscal 2025/26 the Suez Canal Economic Zone drew 117 projects and US$7 billion in investment, with more than 73,000 jobs expected on completion. Most of those jobs will go to Egyptians, though. Jushi Egypt reports over 98% local staff, and 76% of its middle managers are local. Posts for Chinese staff are limited and tend to be technical or managerial, which is what a foreign-worker quota produces.
Egypt work visa: permit and residence process
What people call an “Egypt work visa” is really two authorisations: the Ministry of Labour work permit and work-based residence from the immigration authorities. Lawyers stress that a valid residence permit does not by itself allow you to work, and dependants on family residence cannot simply start a job; they need their own work permit.
- Quota: foreign staff at an establishment, including branches, may not exceed 10% of Egyptian staff. Free-zone companies follow investment-authority rules, and small shops, restaurants and cases approved by an exceptions committee may be excluded. Investment Law projects generally get 10% of total staff, rising to 20% if qualified locals are unavailable.
- Conditions: normally three years of certified relevant experience, a professional licence for regulated work, and proof of real need. The employer must also appoint two Egyptian assistants to train.
- Closed jobs: tour guiding and export and customs clearance are not open to foreigners.
- Employer checksConfirm quota and any exemption, and open a company file with the labour authorities
- Prepare documentsPassport, contract, degree and experience proof, authenticated and translated into Arabic as required
- Filing and security clearanceWait for security approval; a Form 4 receipt is not a general right to start work
- EntryEnter after approval; those arriving on a prior visa must apply for the licence within 60 days
- Medical and feesGet the HIV test certificate from an approved body, pay online and collect the work card
- Work residenceKeep it aligned with the permit, and update both on renewal or a change of job
On cost, Sadany & Partners gives the Decree 279 schedule as EGP 6,000 (about RMB 723) for the first year, rising each year to a ceiling of EGP 100,000, plus EGP 300 for the card. Fragomen put the residence application and renewal fee at US$150 in October 2024. In August 2026 the labour ministry said it was preparing a unified electronic platform covering company registration through to issuance and verification, with no launch date given. Check the Ministry of Labour website for the current entry point.
Permits normally last a year or less. Renewal must be filed at least two months before expiry, and from the fourth year it goes to the ministry’s central department with reasons. For entry categories and visa steps see our Egypt visa guide.
Sort out your degree and employment records in China before you leave. See our guides to degree authentication and to apostille and consular legalisation. Egypt is not listed as a party to the Apostille Convention (HCCH), so Chinese documents generally need consular legalisation; confirm with the Egyptian mission and your employer.
Do not start work on a tourist visa or e-visa. Under the new law, employers face fines of EGP 20,000 to 100,000, multiplied by the number of workers and doubled for repeat violations, and a permit used for another job or employer can be cancelled. Be wary of agents who promise to “sort it out after you land”, and do not leave your original passport with an employer or agent for long periods.
Salaries in Egypt
The EGP 7,000 private-sector minimum has applied since 1 March 2025. The July 2026 rise to EGP 8,000 is the government-sector figure. Reports in late October 2026 show no new private-sector decision, although a prime ministerial decision published in October 2026 requires the National Wages Council to review the minimum at least once a year. Official average pay data is old, so the chart mixes different measures and is only a sense of scale.
In RMB terms, EGP 35,000 is about 4,217 and EGP 10,000 about 1,205. We found no reliable public data on pay for Chinese-speaking roles or Chinese expatriates, and listings rarely show salaries. When negotiating, ask about the pay currency and where it is paid, housing, return flights, medical cover and what happens if the pound falls. For receiving pay and exchanging money see our Egypt banking guide.
Contracts and labour law: how it differs from China
The new law requires a written contract in Arabic, in four copies. A foreign worker who does not read Arabic may also have a version in their own language, but the Arabic text prevails, so a Chinese version is no substitute.
| Item | Egypt (Law No. 14 of 2025) | China |
|---|---|---|
| Hours | 8 a day, 48 a week | 8 a day, average 44 a week |
| Overtime | At least 35% extra by day, 70% extra at night | At least 150% on workdays, 200% on rest days, 300% on public holidays |
| Probation | Up to 3 months, once per employer | 1 to 6 months depending on contract term |
| Annual leave | 15 days in year one, 21 from year two; 30 after 10 years or at age 50 | 5 days after 1 year, 10 after 10 years, 15 after 20 years |
| Dismissal | Open-ended contracts: 3 months’ written notice; at least 2 months’ pay per year of service if unjustified | Economic compensation of 1 month’s pay per full year |
Other points: maternity leave is four months. The annual raise is at least 3% of insured pay, with a monthly floor of EGP 250 in the 2025 decision. Resignation must be in writing and confirmed by the competent authority; if the employer does not decide within ten days it is deemed accepted. The three-month notice also applies; it cannot be cut by agreement, though the employer may waive it. Unless the contract says otherwise, the employer must pay to send a foreign worker home when employment ends, so get this in writing.
Social insurance and income tax
Under Social Insurance Law No. 148 of 2019 and its regulations, foreign employees have had to join the Egyptian scheme since 28 September 2021, unless they come from a country with a totalisation agreement and can show proof of contributing at home. The published list names Cyprus, France, Greece, Morocco and the Netherlands, not China.
The insurable floor is EGP 2,700 in 2026, and the band moves to EGP 3,200 to 19,300 in 2027. Income tax is progressive at 0% to 27.5%. The first EGP 40,000 of earned income a year is taxed at 0%, and there is a further EGP 20,000 annual salary exemption (PwC, reviewed August 2026). Your employer calculates the withholding; get separate advice on Chinese tax residency.
Finding a job in Egypt: practical channels
- Wuzzuf: Egypt’s general job board. Search for Chinese Speaker or Chinese Translator.
- LinkedIn and Bayt.com: white-collar and management roles, with Bayt covering the wider Middle East and North Africa.
- Companies and zones: apply to the overseas recruitment arm of a Chinese company’s head office, which tends to settle the permit question more easily than looking locally.
Once you have an offer, confirm the employer’s legal name, its quota position and who files the permit before you buy a ticket.
FAQ
Can I enter on an e-visa and look for work?
Looking around is not the same as working, but you cannot start a job before you have a permit. The employer applies, and security clearance usually comes before entry, so it is safer to have an offer first.
Can I work in Egypt without Arabic?
Possibly, in technical or management roles at Chinese companies, where public listings focus on Chinese and professional skills. But the Arabic contract prevails, so have someone check it before you sign.
Can Chinese workers take Egyptian social insurance home?
We found no China-Egypt social security agreement, and China is not on the list above. Foreign staff generally contribute in Egypt. Ask your employer and the Egyptian insurance authority what happens when you leave.
