The first hurdle to working in Argentina is status, not language. Chinese citizens cannot enter as tourists and arrange a permit while working. The normal route is to be hired by an employer registered with Argentina’s migration authority, have that employer apply for an entry permit, and then obtain a work visa at an Argentine mission in China. For people with Mandarin and Spanish, jobs are mainly in Chinese-run retail, Chinese-backed mining, cars and import-export, although no official figures exist for these roles.
The second reality is pay. The legal minimum wage in November 2026 is ARS 398,800 a month, about RMB 1,721, and average taxable pay for stable registered workers in August 2026 was about ARS 1.98 million, about RMB 8,556. Peso wages change almost monthly, so every figure here carries a date. Rates are for 4 November 2026: USD 1 ≈ ARS 1,546 (Central Bank of Argentina reference rate), USD 1 ≈ RMB 6.67 (cross rate from European Central Bank reference rates), so RMB 1 ≈ ARS 232.
The 2026 job market: moderate unemployment, few good jobs
The national statistics institute (INDEC) put urban unemployment at 7.9% in Q2 2026: 5.6% in the City of Buenos Aires, 8.8% in its suburbs, 10.5% in Greater Córdoba and 11.5% in Greater Rosario. Job quality matters more: INDEC data reported in the media show about 45% of workers in informal employment, and a University of Buenos Aires report says registered private employment had fallen for 11 straight months by April 2026. Shops and restaurants do not lack work; what is scarce is work with a contract and social security, which is exactly what a work residence requires.
Registered private wages rose 30.4% year on year in August 2026 against inflation of 33.5%, so purchasing power was below its level a year earlier, although in August itself wages rose 2.6% against monthly inflation of 1.7%. When negotiating, ask how raises work; they usually follow union wage rounds (paritarias). For the wider picture, see our complete guide to moving to Argentina.
Work for Chinese speakers: sectors and Chinese companies
The role types below are our own judgement based on what these companies do, not their job listings, and investment details come from media reports.
| Sector | Chinese-linked companies | Roles that may use Chinese |
|---|---|---|
| Lithium | Ganfeng Lithium (Cauchari-Olaroz, Jujuy), Zijin Mining (Tres Quebradas, Catamarca) | Interpreting, engineering coordination, procurement |
| Gold | Shandong Gold has held 50% of the Veladero mine in San Juan since 2017 | Interpreting, technical liaison |
| Cars | BYD entered in September 2025 and reached the top ten by sales in 2026; Baic, MG and Chery also sell there | Import coordination, after-sales training |
| Retail and restaurants | Neighbourhood Chinese supermarkets, Chinese restaurants | Shop staff, store managers; check that the job is formally registered |
| Import-export | China has overtaken Brazil as the largest source of imports so far in 2026 (media report, August 2026) | Purchasing, order handling, freight |
Mines are mostly far from the capital, so ask about rotations, housing and medical cover before accepting a posting. Spanish is a hard requirement. Chinese-only jobs are mostly in Chinese-run businesses, so check case by case whether the employer can offer the formal contract a residence application needs; this is our judgement, not an official statistic.
Salaries in Argentina: reading peso pay
| Indicator | ARS/month | ≈ USD | ≈ RMB | Period |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Legal minimum wage | 398,800 | 258 | 1,721 | Nov 2026 |
| Average income, employees without pension contributions | 706,204 | 457 | 3,048 | Q2 2026 |
| Average income, employees with pension contributions | 1,433,794 | 927 | 6,188 | Q2 2026 |
| Poverty line, family of four | 1,632,505 | 1,056 | 7,046 | Sep 2026 |
| RIPTE average taxable pay | 1,982,518 | 1,282 | 8,556 | Aug 2026 |
| Average registered private-sector wage | 2,256,861 | 1,460 | 9,740 | Jul 2026 |
Employees with pension contributions earn about twice as much on average as those without. Employee income is self-reported in INDEC’s household survey and the last two rows come from social security records, so the two should not be compared directly. The minimum wage has set monthly rises, reaching ARS 437,000 in April 2027.
Expected pay in mining is about RMB 9,833 a month and in customer service about RMB 4,587. Apart from mining and some expatriate postings, local peso pay rarely beats what office workers earn in China’s first-tier cities. Net pay loses a 17% employee contribution (pension 11%, PAMI 3%, health insurance 3%). Media estimates suggest that from July 2026 a single employee starts paying income tax at about ARS 3.5 million gross a month; see our Argentina tax guide.
Dollar pay has been legal since 2026: Law 27.802 allows wages in foreign currency and the central bank has opened dollar salary accounts. Wages must still go into your own account, and cash payment is void.
Argentina work visa: three routes and the process
The right to work comes from residence status, and you cannot apply alone: you need an employer on the migration authority’s sponsor register (RENURE). This section follows the National Migration Directorate pages, as of November 2026.
| Route | Who it suits | Residence period |
|---|---|---|
| Contracted worker, from abroad | You are in China with an employer’s offer | Up to 3 years |
| Contracted worker, in Argentina | You entered lawfully and are eligible to change status, applying through RaDEX | 1 year, renewable |
| Specialist or company transfer | Technical or advisory roles, intra-group moves | Up to 2 years |
- Get hiredConfirm the employer is registered and sign a contract taking effect once approved, with pay meeting the collective agreement
- Employer seeks the entry permitIt files tax records, reasons for hiring a foreigner and proof of your experience
- Prepare documents in ChinaPassport, police certificate, degree documents, with authentication and translation
- Apply at the missionBook with the mission for your area, file, attend the interview and sign the contract before the consul
- Enter and complete residenceFinish the residence steps and start work only once you are authorised to work
The Argentine Foreign Ministry requires a passport valid for at least six months, and applicants aged 16 or over need a police certificate from any country where they lived more than a year in the past three years. See our guides to the passport, the police certificate and the apostille; authenticated documents must then be translated into Spanish by an Argentine public translator.
Fees (as of November 2026): a consular fee of USD or EUR 250 (about RMB 1,668) and a USD 600 migration fee for non-Mercosur citizens (about RMB 4,003), paid only when the mission says so. On the migration fee schedule, the entry permit and an in-country residence application each cost ARS 100,000 (about RMB 432). No official processing times are published. For a comparison of categories, see our Argentina visa guide.
Entering as a tourist generally does not let you switch to work residence inside Argentina. Under Disposition 1520/2024, a change is possible only for nationals of visa-exempt countries, family reunification and similar cases, with a case-by-case exception held by the authority. Plan on the route from abroad.
The 2025–2026 migration rules
Emergency Decree 366/2025 was published on 29 May 2025. In June 2026 the federal civil and commercial appeals court (the Volosh case) and the National Electoral Chamber rejected its citizenship provisions; the NGO CAREF notes that such rulings do not automatically extend to residence and other parts. The rules below were still being applied as of July 2026, and we found no report of them being struck down.
- No status, no work: the amended Article 53 bars irregular residents from employment and self-employment.
- The authority can check: Article 53 bis lets it verify identity and status and ask a court for preventive detention.
- Report your address: declare a real and an electronic address and report changes within three business days.
- Permanent residence bar: applicants must prove sufficient means, which makes stable work more important.
Decree 681/2026, published on 30 July 2026, makes inciting hatred or violence against Argentines or insulting national symbols a ground for cancelling residence (according to media reports).
Contracts and employee rights after the 2026 reform
Law 27.802, the Labour Modernisation Law, was published on 6 March 2026. A first-instance court suspended more than 80 articles, the suspension was lifted in April, and in July a different appeal court rejected the CGT union federation’s appeal; constitutionality is still being decided. Separately, in March 2026 a federal court in San Martín, at the request of the commerce workers’ federation, suspended Articles 131 and 133 for commerce collective agreements for six months; we could not confirm the current status.
| Item | Argentina (as of November 2026) | Compared with China |
|---|---|---|
| Probation | Generally 6 months (law-firm guidance); workers must be registered during it | Up to 6 months in China |
| Hours | 8 a day, 48 a week; a written hours bank is allowed | Higher ceiling |
| Overtime | Plus 50% on working days, plus 100% after 13:00 on Saturdays and on Sundays and holidays (law-firm guidance) | Calculated differently |
| Thirteenth month | Twice a year, each 50% of the best monthly pay of that half, by 30 June and 18 December | No statutory equivalent in China |
| Annual leave | 14, 21, 28 or 35 calendar days by length of service | 5, 10 or 15 days in China |
| Sick leave | Full pay for 3 or 6 months, or 6 or 12 with dependants | A draft reform would have cut this; it was dropped |
| Severance | One month per year, with a fraction over 3 months counting as a year; base capped at 3 times the collective-agreement average, but not below 67% of your pay | Also one month per year in China, with a 12-year cap for high earners |
| Notice | Employer gives 1 month (2 after 5 years’ service); none during probation | Generally 30 days in China |
Decree 1228/2026 postponed the start of the Labour Assistance Fund (FAL) to 1 December 2026. From that month employers pay in monthly, and must still make up any severance shortfall.
Ask for a payslip (recibo de sueldo) every month, and check with the tax agency, ARCA, whether your employer is paying contributions. The official pages list the labour helpline 0800-666-4100.
Finding a job: channels, degrees and scams
Common platforms are Computrabajo (operational, customer service and sales roles), Bumeran and ZonaJobs (administrative, sales, middle management), LinkedIn, and the public Portal Empleo and TrabajoBA. Chinese companies often recruit on their own websites. The Chinese community has many leads, but confirm there is a contract first.
The official list of partner countries does not include China, so a Chinese degree must go through reválida at a national university, a step regulated professions such as medicine cannot skip. For authentication in China, see our degree authentication guide.
Under China’s Regulations on Overseas Labour Service Cooperation, firms sending workers abroad need a licence and may not take deposits; foreign firms or individuals may not recruit inside China; and nobody may organise work abroad under the guise of tourism. Refuse anyone who tells you to travel on a tourist visa and “switch to a work visa on arrival”.
To compare destinations, see our guides to working in Brazil and working in Panama.
FAQ
Can I go to Argentina first and look for work there?
You can visit and attend interviews, but you cannot work before you hold a work residence, and you will usually still need the route from abroad.
Can I get residence by working in a Chinese supermarket?
Only if the employer is on RENURE, pay meets the collective agreement and the contract is certified. A job with no contract and cash wages does not qualify.
How long until I can apply for permanent residence?
Non-Mercosur citizens with three years of temporary residence who meet the conditions can apply, and must prove sufficient means.
