Most PRC passport holders who want to work in the United Kingdom first need a job offer from a UK employer that can sponsor them. The main route is the Skilled Worker visa, which as of October 2026 generally requires a salary of at least £41,700 a year and English at level B2. People who finish a degree in the UK can stay on with a Graduate visa and look for work. The labour market is steady rather than hot: unemployment is 4.7% and there are about 691,000 vacancies.

Compared with China, UK employment protection is spelled out in more detail: an average working-week cap of 48 hours, at least 28 days of paid holiday a year, a legal minimum of £12.71 an hour, and automatic enrolment into a workplace pension for eligible staff. This guide takes the “moving from China” angle and walks through the job market, sectors where Chinese speakers commonly work, visa routes and the application process, pay levels, contracts and rights, credential recognition, job-search channels and common scams, so you can do the maths and see the risks before you leave.

The UK job market in 2026

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) labour market release of 20 October 2026, the UK unemployment rate for people aged 16 and over was 4.7% in June to August 2026, and the employment rate for those aged 16 to 64 was 75.3%. There were about 691,000 vacancies in July to September 2026 (an early estimate that may be revised). Annual growth in regular pay, excluding bonuses, was 3.7%.

On pay, the ONS Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE) shows median gross annual earnings for full-time employees of £39,039 in April 2025, median weekly earnings of £766.60 and median hourly pay excluding overtime of £19.67. At the PBOC central parity rate of 16 October 2026 (£1 ≈ ¥8.90), the annual median is roughly ¥348,000 – an approximation only, and rent and transport in London cost noticeably more than in China’s tier-one cities. For an overview of the country, see our United Kingdom moving guide.

For job seekers from China the decisive point is that most work visas require the employer to be a Home Office licensed sponsor, so whether a company can sponsor you often matters more than whether a vacancy exists.

Sectors where Chinese and Mandarin speakers often work

MOFCOM’s Country (Region) Guide for Foreign Investment and Cooperation: United Kingdom (2025 edition) puts the Chinese community in the UK at about 700,000, mostly in larger cities such as London, Manchester and Birmingham. Mandarin combined with professional skills is commonly useful in the following areas (a general overview, not official statistics):

  • Chinese companies and China-facing roles: the 2025 Report on Chinese-Funded Enterprises in the UK, released by the China Chamber of Commerce in the UK in June 2026, counts 914 large Chinese enterprises in the UK creating more than 56,000 direct jobs. Companies named in Xinhua’s report include Bank of China London Branch, Air China, SF Express, BYD, Chery and JD.com (Joybuy), across finance, aviation and logistics, electric vehicles and e-commerce.
  • Finance, law and consulting: cross-border and renminbi business in the City of London and China investment advisory, usually requiring UK-recognised professional qualifications and fluent English.
  • Education: Mandarin teaching, international student recruitment and services, and university research roles.
  • Restaurants and Chinese supermarkets: plenty of jobs, but many are lower-skilled and often fall short of Skilled Worker occupation and salary rules, so check carefully whether sponsorship is possible.

Main work visa routes for Chinese citizens

The common work routes for Chinese citizens are below (always check GOV.UK for the details; our overview of all routes is on the UK visa guide):

Route Employer sponsor needed? Key conditions (as of October 2026) Length
Skilled Worker Yes A “higher skilled” occupation; salary of at least £41,700 or the occupation’s going rate, whichever is higher; English at B2 Up to 5 years per grant, extendable; under current rules settlement possible after 5 years (the government has proposed an “earned settlement” model with a 10-year baseline; not in force as of October 2026)
Graduate No Completed an eligible UK degree; application fee £937 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, 18 months from 1 January 2027; 3 years for PhDs; cannot be extended
High Potential Individual (HPI) No Degree from an eligible university in the last 5 years, plus proof of personal savings 2 years (3 for PhDs), cannot be extended
Health and Care Worker Yes Eligible doctors, nurses and some health and social care roles; no immigration health surcharge As Skilled Worker

Some special cases of the Skilled Worker route (for example, certain jobs may still qualify at a salary of at least £33,400) have detailed rules, so compare your occupation code and its going rate directly on the official page Skilled Worker visa: your job.

Skilled Worker application process and fees

  1. Find a licensed sponsorCheck that the employer appears on the government’s Register of licensed sponsors: workers
  2. Get the offer and a CoSThe employer issues a certificate of sponsorship with the occupation code, salary and reference number
  3. Gather documentsPassport, proof of B2 English, tuberculosis (TB) test certificate, proof of funds; a criminal record certificate for education, healthcare and social care roles
  4. Apply online and payPay the visa fee and the immigration health surcharge (IHS)
  5. Prove your identityGive fingerprints and a photo at a visa application centre, or use the UK Immigration: ID Check app, as instructed
  6. Wait for the decisionUsually about 3 weeks from outside the UK; the decision arrives by email

Official fees as of October 2026: from outside the UK, £819 for a visa of up to 3 years and £1,618 for more than 3 years; inside the UK (extend or switch), £943 and £1,865; jobs on the immigration salary list, £628 and £1,235. The immigration health surcharge is £1,035 per year. Unless you have lived legally in the UK for 12 months or your employer covers your first month’s costs, you must show at least £1,270 held in your account for 28 days in a row.

China is on the list of countries that require a TB test: applicants coming for 6 months or more must be tested at a Home Office-approved clinic, and the certificate is valid for 6 months from the date of the X-ray. For how to get a criminal record certificate in China, see our police certificate guide.

Pay levels and the minimum wage

From April 2026 the National Living Wage for workers aged 21 and over is £12.71 an hour (about ¥113), £10.85 for ages 18 to 20, and £8.00 for under-18s and apprentices. In the previous year (April 2025 to March 2026) the rate for 21 and over was £12.21.

UK annual pay benchmarks (£, gross)

Skilled Worker general threshold£41,700
Median full-time pay (April 2025)£39,039
Skilled Worker lower figure in some cases£33,400
Minimum wage × 37.5 h × 52 weeks£24,785

The chart shows a simple reality: the visa threshold sits above the national full-time median, so sponsored jobs are concentrated in middle- and higher-paid occupations. Once you have an offer, budget with take-home pay rather than gross pay; income tax and National Insurance are explained in our UK tax guide.

Employment contracts and core rights

Item UK statutory standard (as of October 2026)
Working hours No more than 48 hours a week on average, normally averaged over 17 weeks; workers can opt out in writing
Paid holiday At least 28 days (5.6 weeks) for a 5-day week, which may include bank holidays; statutory cap of 28 days
Notice from the employee At least 1 week after more than a month in the job
Notice from the employer 1 month to 2 years: at least 1 week; 2 to 12 years: 1 week per full year; 12 years or more: 12 weeks
Statutory Sick Pay Up to £123.25 a week, for up to 28 weeks
Workplace pension Automatic enrolment if aged 22 to State Pension age and earning at least £10,000 a year; employer pays at least 3%, total minimum 8%

Before signing, check the job title, pay, hours, holiday, probation and notice period in the contract, and make sure they match your CoS – a mismatch can affect your visa. China’s “five insurances and one fund” roughly correspond in the UK to National Insurance, the workplace pension and the NHS; for private health cover and other protection see our UK insurance guide, and for a salary account see the UK banking guide.

Credential recognition and professional qualifications

UK employers and institutions often use a Statement of Comparability from UK ENIC (run by Ecctis) to confirm the UK level of an overseas qualification. If you use a non-UK degree to prove your English for the Skilled Worker visa, you also need an Ecctis assessment confirming that it is equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree or higher and was taught in English. Getting your degree verified and translated in China before you leave saves a lot of back-and-forth – see our degree authentication guide. Regulated professions such as doctors, lawyers, accountants and teachers also need registration with the relevant UK professional body.

Where to look for jobs

  • Find a job: the free official job site run by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), covering England, Scotland and Wales; Northern Ireland jobs are on JobApplyNI. Website: findajob.dwp.gov.uk.
  • Civil Service Jobs: the official platform for UK civil service roles (many have nationality rules, so read the requirements carefully).
  • NHS Jobs, university vacancy pages and company career sites: healthcare, research and large-employer jobs are mostly advertised directly through official channels.
  • Chinese companies in the UK, chamber events and alumni networks: useful if you have China-facing experience.

Before applying, search the company name in the register of licensed sponsors. An employer without a licence cannot sponsor you for a Skilled Worker visa, however keen it is to hire you.

Scams and illegal working

An employer that fails to carry out proper right-to-work checks can be fined up to £60,000 for each illegal worker, and knowingly employing one can lead to up to 5 years in prison. Working without the right to work also has serious immigration consequences for you. Be very wary of any agent who asks you to pay to “buy” sponsorship.

DWP’s Find a job service warns job seekers to be wary of emails asking them to transfer money to secure a job, not to put bank details, National Insurance number or date of birth on a CV or application, and notes that the Find a job team will never contact you via WhatsApp; suspicious messages can be reported to Action Fraud or forwarded free to 7726. In September 2025 the Chinese Embassy in the UK also warned that fraudsters were posing as embassy staff in recruitment ads on social media to collect personal identity details; the embassy does not ask for money transfers by phone or email. The UK emergency number is 999.
