If you want to work in South Korea, start with your status, then look at jobs. For PRC citizens with no ethnic Korean background and no Korean degree, the usual route is the employer-sponsored E-7 skilled visa, whose E-7-1 category sets a minimum salary of 31.12 million won for 2026. Ethnic Koreans from China have used the F-4 route since February 2026. You cannot work on a tourist entry.
This guide follows the order of a move from China: the market, jobs, pay, visas, contracts and job search channels. Pay and rules are as of November 2026. RMB figures use about 1 yuan = 200.7 won, derived from the Banque de France euro rates for won and yuan on 30 October 2026, and are approximate.
South Korea’s job market
South Korea’s Ministry of Data and Statistics (formerly Statistics Korea) reports 113,000 more people in work in September 2026 than a year earlier, unemployment of just 2.0% and an employment rate of 63.5% for those aged 15 and over. Low unemployment does not mean jobs are easy to find: the employment rate for those aged 15 to 29 fell 1.1 points to 44.0%.
Growth is uneven. Healthcare and social welfare added the most jobs (+207,000) and manufacturing edged up (+16,000), while accommodation and food (-97,000), agriculture, forestry and fisheries (-94,000) and construction (-48,000) shrank.
Chinese are the largest foreign group. At the end of December 2025, about 981,000 Chinese nationals including ethnic Koreans lived in Korea, 35.2% of about 2.78 million foreign residents. Among workers in May 2025, 341,000 were Korean-Chinese and 54,000 were other Chinese nationals. So most “Chinese” working in Korea rely on ethnic Korean status, and ordinary PRC citizens are a much smaller group.
Jobs for Mandarin speakers
We found no official count of Mandarin jobs, so this list follows the E-7 occupation list and public reporting. The E-7 list had 94 occupations as of August 2026 (a private compilation from the HiKorea manual, as are the codes below). Those closest to Mandarin skills are:
- Translators and interpreters (code 2814, E-7-1): the E-7-1 occupation that uses Mandarin most directly.
- Overseas sales (2742, E-7-1): needs an employment recommendation from a designated body.
- IT staff (2211 to 2233 and others, E-7-1): technical skill decides, and Mandarin is a bonus.
- Duty-free sales (31215, E-7-2) and tour interpreter-guides (43213, E-7-2, with a culture ministry recommendation): a Korean private research firm forecast more than 7 million mainland visitors in 2026, up 15%. That is a forecast, not an official figure.
On Chinese capital in Korea: Alibaba International and Shinsegae announced a 50:50 joint venture in December 2024 covering Gmarket and AliExpress Korea, and the South China Morning Post describes BYD as one of Korea’s fastest-growing imported EV brands. This shows only that they do business in Korea. It does not mean they are hiring or will sponsor an E-7. To compare other Asian destinations, see working in Japan and working in Singapore.
Pay and the minimum wage
The 2026 minimum wage is 10,320 won an hour. The labour ministry published the 2027 rate on 5 August 2026: 10,700 won an hour, up 3.7%.
| Item | Won | Approx. RMB |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 hourly minimum | 10,320 | 51 |
| 2027 hourly minimum | 10,700 | 53 |
| 2026 monthly minimum (209 hours, our calculation) | 2,156,880 | 10,750 |
| 2027 monthly minimum (209 hours) | 2,236,300 | 11,140 |
| E-7-1 annual salary floor (2026) | 31.12m | 155,000 |
| E-7-2 and E-7-3 annual salary floor (2026) | 25.89m | 129,000 |
| E-7-4 annual salary standard (2026) | 26m | 130,000 |
These averages include bonuses, which are large at big firms, so new foreign hires should not treat them as a benchmark. Foreign workers’ real pay looks more like this: in the 2025 survey, 50.2% of foreign wage earners made 2 to 3 million won a month (about 10,000 to 15,000 yuan) and 36.9% made 3 million won or more. Among professionals, 50.8% reached 3 million won or more.
Work visas: the main routes for PRC citizens
This table covers work points only. For entry rules and all visa types, see our South Korea visa guide. HiKorea and Ministry of Justice notices are the final authority.
| Visa | Who it suits | Key conditions |
|---|---|---|
| E-7-1 to E-7-3 | Professional, semi-professional and general skilled staff with a Korean employer | Occupation must be on the list and pay must qualify. E-7-1 normally needs a related master’s, a bachelor’s plus 1 year of experience, or 5 years of experience |
| E-7-4 | Skilled workers already in Korea | A conversion visa, not available directly from China; conditions include 4+ lawful years on E-9 or E-10 within the past 10 years |
| E-9 (Employment Permit System) | Non-professional jobs in manufacturing, farming, fishing and similar | China is among 18 sending countries; the 2026 quota is 80,000, down from 130,000 in 2025 |
| F-4 (includes former H-2 group) | Ethnic Koreans from China | No new H-2 since 12 February 2026; ethnic Koreans can apply for F-4, except those with certain criminal records. About 5 hours of adaptation training required; some simple labour remains restricted |
| D-10 job seeker | Graduates and talent seeking work in Korea | Generally 60+ points out of 190; 60 to 79 points allows up to 1 year, 80+ up to 3 years; internships allowed, but they do not replace a work visa |
| F-2-7 points residence | People with long-term work in Korea | At least 80 of 170 points; income scored from tax certificates; check HiKorea for eligible statuses and years |
| Top-Tier (F-2-T) | Top talent in advanced industries | Generally a master’s or doctorate from a world top-100 university, 8 years of experience (3 at a top-500 company) and pay of at least 3 times per capita GNI |
The E-7 wage floor no longer follows GNI. According to recruitment platform KOWORK, the old standard was 80% of per capita GNI (70% for small and venture firms), and since 1 April 2025 it has been a single amount published by the Ministry of Justice, the same for every company size. Per capita GNI was 52.42 million won in 2025, but the “80% of GNI” sums still found online no longer apply. Current amounts took effect on 1 February 2026 and run only to 31 December 2026. The 2027 minimum wage works out at about 26.84 million won a year, already above the current E-7-2 and E-7-3 floor, so check for a new notice when you sign.
What counts as pay. Agencies report that tax-free allowances such as meal money are generally excluded, and “up to” or conditional bonuses are often rejected. Reviewers look at fixed, taxable annual pay. E-7-2 and E-7-3 also have a ratio limit: broadly, one foreign hire per five Korean staff with at least 3 months of employment insurance. Check this first if the offer comes from a small company.
E-9: being on the list is not an opening. The list of 18 sending countries published by The Korea Herald and Korea JoongAng Daily in August 2026 includes China (Kazakhstan is the new 18th, with quotas from 2028). We could not read a Korean government page, and we found no recent EPS-TOPIK test in China. If you are interested, confirm with HRD Korea or the official portal, and do not trust a broker’s promises.
Top-Tier. On 2025 GNI, three times comes to about 157 million won (about 780,000 yuan). That is our estimate. From June 2026 the visa also covers science and technology professors and researchers, who need a recommendation from the science ministry.
E-7 steps: from offer to arrival
- Check occupation and payAsk the employer for the occupation code and annual salary, and compare them with this year’s standard
- Sign the contractShow the job, fixed annual pay and hours, and keep later payslips and insurance records consistent with it
- Prepare documentsPassport, visa form, photo, contract, employer’s business registration, proof of education and experience, and translations
- ApplyAt a consular post abroad, or at an immigration office if you are already lawfully in Korea
- RegisterComplete alien registration within 90 days of arrival
- ExtendThe wage rule also applies at extension; check whether a report or permission is needed before changing jobs
Agencies quote 2 to 4 weeks after submission and 4 to 8 weeks for complex cases. This is not an official promise. Mainland China application locations are in the visa guide above. Follow the consulate’s checklist on whether degree proof and a police certificate are needed, and how they must be certified. For how to get them, see our apostille guide and police certificate guide. The Apostille Convention has applied to China since 7 November 2023.
Contracts and employee rights
Korean labour law generally applies equally to foreign employees. These are the usual standards at workplaces with five or more staff:
- Hours: 8 a day and 40 a week, plus up to 12 hours of agreed overtime, for a 52-hour cap.
- Premiums: at least 50% extra for overtime, night work (10pm to 6am) and holiday work, and 100% for holiday hours beyond eight.
- Annual leave: 15 paid days after a year with 80% attendance; one day a month before that.
- Severance: after 1 year of continuous service, at least 30 days’ average wages per year, even if the contract says nothing.
- Dismissal: needs just cause and written notice, with 30 days’ warning or an extra 30 days’ ordinary wages.
Firms with fewer than five staff are very different: overtime premiums and annual leave rules do not apply, though the minimum wage, severance and paid weekly rest day do. Keep this in mind before accepting a high hourly rate at a small firm.
On social insurance, China and Korea have a social security agreement. Detached staff with a Chinese Certificate of Coverage are exempt from Korean National Pension and employment insurance; short-term employees, the self-employed and investors are exempt from National Pension only. Submit the certificate to the National Pension Service International Center, and the exemption starts the following month. Ask first whether a direct hire of a Korean company counts as a short-term employee. For health and other cover, see our South Korea insurance guide.
Do not work if your status does not allow it. Korea arrested 628 undocumented delivery riders in a four-month sweep. Students who work must also meet conditions such as grades and Korean ability. If wages go unpaid, keep attendance records, payslips and transfer records, and report to the regional labour office or a labour inspector. For rights abuses, call 1345 and press 1, the Ministry of Justice line for foreigners.
Where to find jobs
| Channel | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Work24 (고용24) | All sectors, government job data | Labour ministry portal that absorbed Worknet and foreign worker services; mainly in Korean |
| Saramin, JobKorea | Mainstream Korean employers | Largest boards, Korean only |
| Wanted | Tech and startups | Often shows salary ranges |
| LinkedIn, PeoplenJob | Multinationals | English or bilingual roles |
| KOWORK | E-7 and F-2 employers | Visa filters |
Before applying, ask one question: do you sponsor E-7, and under which occupation code? It saves a lot of time. The mainstream job boards are Korean only, so prepare your Korean early. For life and community after arrival, see our South Korea country guide. If you are still comparing destinations, see working in the United States.
FAQ
Can a PRC citizen go to Korea on an E-9?
On paper China is on the sending-country list, but we found no recent recruitment aimed at China. Without an official recruitment notice, do not pay a broker.
Can ethnic Koreans from China still get an H-2?
Not as a new applicant. No new H-2 has been issued since 12 February 2026. Current holders can stay until it expires or switch to F-4.
Can I come to Korea first and look for work?
D-10 is the legal job-seeking status, but you need the points. You cannot start work on tourist status.
Can a monthly salary of 2.4 million won qualify for E-7?
That is 28.8 million won a year, below the E-7-1 floor of 31.12 million but above the E-7-2 and E-7-3 floor of 25.89 million. It depends on which category the occupation falls in and on whether the money is fixed, taxable pay.
